WOODBURN, Ind. (WANE) -- Lloy Ball returned home to
the city of Woodburn as an olympic volleyball champion.
The city of Woodburn honored their olympic volleyball
champion in a big way.
"It means a lot to us as a community to back him and as
you can see here with the support we got here today even
with the rain it's a good turnout," said Woodburn Mayor
Richard Hoeppner.
The rain may have cancelled the parade but it didn't stop
hundreds of people from coming out to catch a glimpse of
their hometown hero. There's been many celebrations since
the olympic games, but this is the one that Lloy was
waiting for.
"The people that I've grown up with the people that i've
known for 20 almost 30 years and to see the look on their
face seeing that one of their own is an olympic gold medal
champion is all worth it," said gold medalist Lloy Ball.
Lloy was a star during his high school days. Ever since the
people of Woodburn have stuck by his side.
"I've tried fourteen years to win this gold medal and
through my ups and downs they always stood right there
next to me," said Ball.
For a while it appeared to be only a dream.
"Luckily through the support of my family and these people
right here kept pushing me to keep my dream alive," said
Ball.
And finally this year, that dream came to life.
"You know to be able to stand on a medal podium with a
gold medal with guys that you've gone to battle with
standing around you singing your national anthem on the
biggest stage the olympic games, other than the birth of my
two kids there's not a bigger moment in my life," said Ball.
